Rather than blast you with 'The Biggest Ever Valentine's Day List' of 50 places with meaningless blurb attached, we've curated six options for the day of highly sensual love-making next week. 

Here are two intimate restaurants run by owners that truly care, and a choice of four 5 star hotels that ooze the necessary class and glamour required for a successful schmooze-fest. 


East Eatery

Valentine's Day in Shanghai - keep the Oriental flavours of love alive in this homely Asian hideaway, tucked into the romantic Shanghainese lanes of Tianzifang. 

A special Valentine's menu with six courses of Chinese, Korean and Japanese inspired seduction at RMB 688 per couple will start a night full of love. 

The menu features Asian Tuna tartar, beef consomme, mains of prawn-filled chicken and taragashi seasame oil, Angus beef tenderloin with slow-cooked short-rib with teriyaki glaze, and a white chocolate mousse dessert. Add two glasses of Bisol Jeio Cuvee Rose Brut for RMB 128.

We love this little romantic hideaway, and the owners really put their passion into the whole environment and experience - and the amazing food.

At RMB 990 for two, the menu includesGravelaxof Faeroe Island organic salmon with shrimps avocado, Terrine of foie gras marbled with cinnamon roasted pear and Pear Cognac liquor, and mains of Organic sea bass fish filet pan seared, saffron shell sauce and Australian Black Angus flank steak), mashed potatoes and vegetables, truffle Porto sauce. 

Two sexy desserts complete the meal in a nicely French environment, within walking distance to the Bund.


Grand Hyatt Shanghai

To get straight to the seduction, head to Cloud 9 on the 87th floor for Oyster and Champagne night. For RMB 1,314 net, each couple enjoys twelve tantalizing oysters, a grand dessert, a bottle of champagne with a rose and chocolate gift box.

The Jing An Shangri-La still has that shiny 'new' feel, with a design that sings with Asian sophistication.

Sky Dinner on the 55th Floor:

Look over the entire city as the Horizon Lounge on the 55th floor is the setting for a five-course dinner with a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne and a piece of Swarovski crystal. Dinner is priced at RMB 1,888 for two.

Exquisite Dinner Experience at the 1515 West Chophouse & Bar:

The 1515 West Chophouse & Bar on the fourth floor oozesanambience of class. The set dinner is priced at RMB 888 per person (with one glass of welcome sparkling wine); for an extra RMB 388 per person, couples can complete the indulgence with pairing wines by the hotel’s sommelier team. The restaurant has also prepared a gift of Swarovski crystal for each couple to add sparkle to the night.


Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai

The scents and accents of Shangri-La, with the scenery and the sights of Lujiazui from the area's landmark.

Jade on 36:

Impress your sweetheart with a magnificent 5-course dinner by Chef de Cuisine Jeremy Biasiol at Jade on 36, overlooking the iconic Bund withdazzlingview of the city skyline. 

Begin the evening on a bubbly note with a glass of champagne each, complementing starters such as the Oysters, Champagne Jelly, Green Apple and Edible Flowers, Foie Gras Heart with Raspberry Jelly, Rock Candies and Lychee Sauce and Pan-Seared Scallops with Squid Ink Parsnip Puree, Caviar and Tapioca and Black Ink Tuile. 

Savour the delightful Maine Lobster with Cauliflower Puree, Peach & Mango and Lobster Head Sauce followed by the exquisite M5 Beef Ribeye Wagyu with Mushrooms, Onion Confit, Truffle Coulis and Fresh Truffles. 

The seductive notes of the White and Black Chocolate Ball with Strawberries and Vanilla Ice Cream will conclude the evening on a sweet note.

The menu is RMB 999 net per person inclusive of a glass of Veuve Clicquot Brut each.

The Peninsula Shanghai

Three words: The Peninsula Shanghai. Romance = done.

One Michelin-starred Sir Elly’s will offer its epicurean Lobster & Rosé menu: a six-course delicate and delectable lobster carte du jour with rosé Champagne pairings designed by the restaurant’s resident sommelier Kobe Hou. 

Guests will enjoy a delicious quartet of lobster dishes – black truffle inflected blue lobster carpaccio; poached blue lobster with shrencki caviar and lemongrass jelly; lobster and scallop ravioli and steamed lobster with ponzu sauce – all paired with Veuve Clicqout and Billecart-Salmon rose Champagnes. 

The journey will continue with roasted Australian Wagyu beef tenderloin, lobster cannelloni and tomato royale served with Laurent-Perrier Cuvee Rose and finished with a ‘Paris-Shanghai’ dessert; a festival of strawberry, passion fruit and ginger served with Moet & Chandon Brut Rose and strawberry syrup.

The Sir Elly’s six-course Lobster & Rose Dinner is priced at RMB 2,200 per person with Rosé Champagne pairing at RMB 1,100 )+ 16.6%).
