Shanghai's Sunday Brunches: The Fat Olive, Expo Village
You may already know wine and mezze bar The Fat Olive from its lofty perch atop Silver Court and its cozy spot in Sinan Mansions; but did you know it's actually a triplet? Across the river, on the PuDong side of the HuangPu, the third Fat Olive is located in the former Expo Village. This location recently launched a new Sunday brunch menu, with a selection of some of the classics from its other branches, as well as new items only available in the Village.
The Sunday brunch focuses on traditional Greek recipes with an original approach. For example, the well-known baklava dessert is transformed into a waffle covered by honey, yoghurt, almonds and walnuts (RMB50), highlighted as a special favorite by Manager Darren Greenwood.
The Fat Olive makes a point of honor of importing feta and olives to build Greek flavors, which are used in such dishes as the Pizzini (RMB48), a small fresh pizza topped with typical ingredients such as feta cheese or tzatziki.
Perhaps these eats don't sounds particularly breakfast-like but there are also numerous egg dishes: choose between a Greek omelet, cooked with three types of egg, and served with feta and other Grecian ingredients (RMB55), the saffron and feta scrambled eggs with grilled pita (RMB55), or fried eggs with baked feta, fried potato and roasted tomatoes (RMB75), a light dish that will leave you some room for a subsequent dessert - which brings me to my personal favorites.
Whatever you do, try either the house-made ricotta cheese pancakes with yoghurt and fruit (RMB55) or the afore-mentioned baklava waffle, particularly if you, like me, have a sweet tooth to satisfy.
To complete this pretty picture, there's an extensive wine menu of red, white and sparkling (between RMB38-150 per glass). Since on a Sunday it's okay to indulge yourself a little, throw yourself back with a bottle onto the large, comfy purple sofas and let the soft music wash over you.
