Flea market at KIN Cafe
On Sunday November 27th, KIN Café near West Nanjing Road hosted their bi-monthly flea market. Consisting of three small rooms, the market is certainly flea-sized. One of KIN’s three rooms was occupied with about six or seven stalls of people selling either old belongings or self-made jewelry, and even though one would expect more participants and perhaps a larger choice of products, the market does not fail to satisfy.
Though the used items (mainly old clothes and bags) didn’t differ much from what you would expect at a normal flea market, the stalls belonging to the Shanghai-based designers were definitely worth taking a look at. The market certainly provides a great opportunity to get hold of some unique pieces, (who doesn’t want a pair of Christmas cookie earrings?)
What made this flea market a nice experience was mainly the warm atmosphere – there was relaxed background music, lots of people stopping and chatting with the young designers who are more than willing to discuss their work, and aesthetically pleasing stalls. The venue itself, with its glass ceiling and light-flooded architecture definitely contributed to the positive mood and many visitors were tempted to relax and sit in the café to enjoy some freshly-brewed coffee and reasonably priced cakes and cookies.
KIN’s market is separated into three rooms: a glass-front shop selling skater shoes and shirts, a courtyard-like winter garden with light bulbs dangling from the ceiling, and the café in the last room, from where you can look directly into the kitchen or back into the yard.
The flea-market is worth a checking out for short stop when you’re in the area and care to have a quick look to see if you can find one or two items of interest. It is held on the last Sunday of every odd month.
