Film Pitch Contest: The Public Gets Their Say

All the cameras and lights of Hollywood are flashing away, as the Golden Globes, the SAG Awards, the BAFTAs and the coveted Oscars all get ready to unveil who they'll be rewarding with the most prestigious prizes of the film world. It's not just the big shots that are taking a turn in the spotlight. A new competition is giving one would-be filmmaker the chance to see their artistic vision realized on the silver screen. The Film Pitch Contest, co-sponsored by the People's Choice and the American Film Market, has reached its final stages, and amongst the remaining nominees is Shanghai-based production, Father John.

Going for a film-noir vibe, Father John centers on eponymous protagonist and spy, John, and the international intrigue he encounters when sent to Shanghai. We all know how sordid our city can be and with the West's increasing Sinophilia - which is gradually moving away from just a kung-fu-flick obsession - it's in with a good shot of getting the nod from the public, who will ultimately decide which one of the five shortlisted entries will make the cut. Voting opened two days ago on the People's Choice website, where you can check out the other films hoping to have their very own red carpet premiere.

Polls close on January 20, with the grand unveiling currently set for the following day.
