Seasonal Delights

Not only does autumn in Shanghai bring superb outdoor patio dining, but also two amazing seasonal specialties - hairy crabs and white truffles.

Perhaps you've tried the hairy crab and haven't bought into Shanghai's frenzied love of this hirsute creature. But have you been to Yangcheng Lake and tasted it at the source? A true culinary trip, the lake's scenic views and hairy crabs are sensational - especially the larger crabs. The right sized crabs from the right lake and prepared the right way can really be worth the money and time.

In Shanghai, several restaurants are also offering crab feasts. Le Meridian Sheshan is currently featuring a variety of hairy crab dishes as well as "themed decorations" in its Lake View restaurant. If you enjoy the flavor but not the fight to get at the meat, then Yar Chi Ting at Radisson Hotel Pudong Century Park could be the place for you. Chef Ken Shao has prepared 15 special dishes featuring this favorite Shanghai delicacy both with and without its tiny shell.
Fancy a five-star crab fest without leaving home? Whampoa Club's special gift package includes vinegar, condiments and a vintage 1999 bottle of Tai Pai Yellow Wine along with four individually selected hairy crabs for RMB1000.

An equally indulgent autumn delicacy is the white truffle. Chef Shaun Anthony at Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen is showcasing these small pieces of heaven with a selection of dishes between RMB238-268. The White Truffle and Porcini Risotto is one of his most transcendental creations, featuring a creamy truffle-flecked risotto topped with mascarpone cheese and roasted garlic foam.

Meanwhile, Italian restaurant Casanova is offering a special three-course truffle set menu for RMB596. Highlights include the Scallop Carpaccio with White Truffle, and Lamb Chop with Creamy Truffle Sauce, which can both also be ordered a la carte.
