Stepping aboard the nautically decorated French restaurant, La Crêperie, we set sail for a three-hour voyage of discovery that would take us all the way to peninsular Brittany.
The variety of dishes and, importantly, alcohol had us taken aback. All of the crepes for savory dishes called 'Galettes' are made with buckwheat which is both tasty and healthy - it's gluten-free and full of amino acids. White wheat is used for sweet crêpes.
We started, of course, with a drink - Kir Breton. This light thirst quencher is Brittany cider topped with blackcurrant cream. Subsequent courses were washed down with bowls of dry cider.
Chinese-influenced Chicken Galette Spring Rolls (48RMB) tasted rather spicy, and very healthy. The galette was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside thanks to an imported machine and a Britannic chef. For the main course, if you have a large appetite, the Chicken, Spinach, Egg and Cream Galette (52RMB) was very satisfying. Lovers of cheese should not miss the Camembert, Mushroom and Ham Galette (78RMB). Not since my trip to Saint-Marlo in Brittany have I tasted such good Camembert.
My favorite dessert was the Crêpe with Bananas flambéed with Orange Flavor Liqueur. Its simplicity made the quality of ingredients stand out. For readers with a sweet tooth, crêpes with full-flavour Italian Amorino Gelato are also on the menu.
A Ginger Jamaican Rum and a B52 cocktail later, we were fully convinced of the excellent quality of ingredients served aboard this homey restaurant.
On any given weekend, 400RMB will buy you the perfect romantic experience: freshly imported Brittany oysters and a bottle of red wine. Bon voyage mes amis.
