What makes a good wine-tasting event? For Mr. Enjoy, it's not only excellent wine - that's the sine qua non, not the nec plus ultra. A successful wine event combines delectation with education, stimulation of the mind as well as the palate, delightful conversation with fellow epicureans, and yummy canapés served by attentive and ideally obsequious waitstaff.
The recent Torres event at T8, introducing fine wines from Australian winemaker Bass Phillip, satisfied all of Mr. Enjoy's criteria. Phillip Jones, ranked #11 on the Mixmag Top Winemaker rankings, personally introduced five of his top Pinot Noir wines to our small group. T8 provided a very elegant setting, and a nice selection of food served by appropriately courteous staff. For our oenophile readers, Mr. Enjoy recommends the Bass Phillip Premium Pinot Noir.
Yet the high point for Mr. Enjoy was not the particular fine wines served that evening, but rather the outstanding company and conversation. What kind of person attends a fine wine tasting? Oddly enough, it's the type of person who truly enjoys fine wines - a hobby, a passion, even a calling, that crosses social and professional lines. Mr. Enjoy made new friends from the machine tool, promotional item export, and automotive industry consulting fields - all of whom were world travelers and highly accomplished in their respective fields.
Kudos, therefore to Torres Wines, for selecting not only fine wines and a fine venue, but also a fine combination of guests, whose consistent excellence and diversity made this a memorable event. Mr. Enjoy will never view fine wine tastings the same way again - the point is not just the wine, cheese, and fancy environment - it's the opportunity to interact with other people who have shaped their lives to make enjoyment of fine wine something important for them. Mr. Enjoy now has some new fascinating friends, and a date to meet again for Thai food at a restaurant recommended by same. Mr. Enjoy will definitely be attending future Torres events, looking to expand his circle of connoisseurs, gourmands, and fellow Enjoyers of life in Shanghai.
