Cheap and Cheerful Indian Gem

The sunflower tablecloths, low wooden chairs and bright red sofas might not inspire exotic images of the Indian subcontinent, but don't let that put you off - new restaurant Ganesha is a great option for a cheap, tasty and filling feed.

Nepalese chef Tomo trained in Nepal and India and has 20 years of culinary experience, including a stint in the kitchens of a hotel run by the sister of a former Nepalese king. His excellent value cuisine includes set lunches of curry, vegetables, rice and naan for RMB18-35, and a similar set dinner deal starting from just RMB28.

If you prefer to order a la carte, be sure to try their Samosa (RMB12) and tangy Tomato Soup (RMB12) for starters, followed by their selection of tandoori meats and vindaloo curries. They also have several vegetarian options, including a Mushroom and Spinach Curry (RMB18/RMB32) and Egg Curry (RMB12). Depending on your appetite, portions are available in large and small sizes.

The staff are efficient and friendly and when it gets busy (the restaurant is packed every night from around 7pm), owners Mr and Mrs Lu help out too. While Mr Lu serves customers, his wife works in the kitchen preparing fresh, homemade Indian beverages, such as the refreshing Yoghurt Lassi (RMB12). Originally from Shanghai, the couple has spent the past 30 years in Japan where they opened two successful Indian restaurants.

It's not surprising then that Ganesha has a large Japanese following. It's also popular with local Chinese and other expats, especially during the lunch period. Located in the Huge World complex on Jiangsu Lu, it's easy to reach: take the elevator to the second floor from the main entrance, go through the small corridor and the restaurant is on your left. Book beforehand or be prepared to wait for a table, unless you fancy a bit of take-out, in which case their home delivery service is the easy solution.

The Bottom Line: Go to Ganesha for the homely service and satisfying, low-priced Indian fare.
