New Place; Same Great Taste

Masala Art, which has been serving up fine Indian curries and superb service on Dagu Lu for years, has recently opened a second location on Yandang Lu pedestrian street, near Fuxing Park.
The long rectangular dining room has a more stylized look, without forsaking the welcoming ambience of the original. Comfy banquettes stretch along one wall, adorned with gorgeous silk and sequined cushions. A smart alcove by the kitchen features black and white portraits of beautiful Indian actresses, while a semi-private room off the main dining area is perfect for intimate groups.
The North Indian menu is identical to the Dagu Lu location, with a good mix of hearty curries and lighter vegetarian options. We started with the Broccoli Besani, broccoli florets coated with a peppery gram flour and soft cheese, then char-grilled in the tandoor (RMB48). The Butter Chicken Patiala (RMB58), boneless tandoori chicken served in a spicy buttery sauce, and Raj Kofta Curry (RMB48), which consists of baby spinach and cottage cheese dumplings with button mushrooms and a light tomato gravy, also come highly recommended. These are best washed down with a sweet fruit lassi (RMB20) or cup of marsala tea (RMB18).
A recent addition to the Masala Art menu that we applaud is a selection of healthier, low-fat dishes using olive oil instead of butter. From this section of the menu, the Tandoori Bharwan Khumb (RMB48), a slightly tangy dish of lightly battered and char-grilled mushrooms filled with fresh vegetables, cuts down the fat and cholesterol without sacrificing any of the taste.
Masala Art's service, as usual, is superb. Staff are well trained and well versed on the menu offerings, ably answering questions and offering suggestions when asked.
Great service, delicious menu and stylish ambience - what else could we ask for?
The Bottom Line: An elegant venue, serving Northern Indian cuisine, with a focus on light vegetable based dishes at reasonable prices.
