Kagen Teppanyaki, the sister restaurant to Haiku by Hatsune, offers an intimate dining experience in a sleek that design that begins at the entrance. Walk through the main door and a mirrored wall seems to indicate a dead end. Step a little closer and the wall slides aside to reveal greenery and a lovely water feature. A friendly host awaits to take guests upstairs where skilled chefs sear, flambé, and slice high end cuts of imported meats and fresh vegetables, providing an entertaining as well as heartily satisfying dining experience. A variety of set teppanyaki courses are offered as well as specialties like Kobe steak, sliced sirloin rolled with foie gras, and giant tiger prawns.
The Teppanyaki here is outstanding. The Grilled Salmon (38RMB) is divine - order it medium done, dip in soy sauce and slowly savor. The Grilled Scallops (30RMB) are delicious and the Grilled King Prawns which, after being cooked with a squeeze of lemon juice, are still crisp and delicious. If seafood doesn't appeal, try the high quality Fillet Beef Mignon (60RMB) cooked medium rare with a dash of cooking wine- it is delectable. Appetizers, salads, sushi rolls, sashimi, vegetable and rice dishes are also available. For something different try the Petit Chawanmushi which is steamed egg white topped with salmon roe served in the egg shell. The Grilled Ox Tongue is also popular. Sauces are available but the quality of the ingredients combined with the light seasoning make mouth-watering flavors that do not need anything else.
The prices above are for the a la carte menu, Kagen has an all you can eat lunch buffet where for 168RMB choose from any of the 60 dishes on offer (and soft drinks). In the evenings, the restaurant has a buffet deal for 228RMB which includes additional dishes and beer, sake and other drinks.
Bottom Line: Outstanding teppanyaki, reasonably priced, in a sleek, intimate environment.
