Mix It Up

For a long time, the area around the XinZha Road junction with ShiMen 2 Road has been somewhat of a restaurant wasteland, a dead zone between thickets of eating options. Thankfully, it seems that Bello' Co has risen up to fill the void with an exciting new concept.

Bello' Co aims to be all things to all men and, strange as it may seem, it succeeds with a mixture of cocktail bar, cafe, lunch bistro, fine dining establishment, club and lounge, all rolled into one.

Mixologist and General Director Brian Kay has managed to develop a cocktail and food menu that combines the characteristics of Asian and Spanish meals with a wide appeal. The overall feel is of an upscale, languid lounge, where you are welcome to drop in for lunch or a coffee, and come back later to linger over dinner and cocktails.
Under Brian Kay's careful eye, the cocktails are created with fresh fruit and elements that take a lead from dessert ingredients. The pear, honey and Pernod cocktail (RMB70) is smooth with a pleasing aniseed aftertaste, and the fresh blueberry and mint margarita (RMB70) is full of rich, fruity flavors.

The menu of Spanish tapas and paella is mixed in with Asian sushi and marinated fish, bringing together two cuisines with a tradition of sharing. From the tapas side, such classics as Pan-friend Chorizo with Garlic (RMB45), Gambas al Ajillo (shrimp with spicy garlic, RMB45) and Bunuelos con Jamon (deep fried bacon and mozzarella, RMB40) are all imbued with the robust and authentic taste of Spain. Of the Asian options, the fresh Softshell Crab Tempura Rolls (RMB60), bound in a light crispy sliver of white radish, is a delicate contrast.

Paella is sure to be the star attraction for most diners. A classic choice, the saffron-infused Seafood Paella (RMB185) is loaded with juicy mussels, shrimp and squid, wafting warm, smoky undertones. Spinning a unique twist on the original, the black-ink-infused rice with squid provides a more unusual taste for the adventurous - and this venue is nothing if not ideal for the adventurous.

The Bottom Line: A venue with multiple personalities: you should get to know them all.
