It's often hard to find a restaurant amongst the tangled maze that is Taikang Lu, but if you look for the pink signposts starting at the Taikang road entrance they will lead you to Tai Thai Restaurant and Lounge. Part owner, Michelle Lee, is also an accomplished designer and it shows in the exquisite maroon and dark orange washed walls, dim lighting and warm wooden floors. Large comfy sofas, tassel curtains and soft Thai music playing in the background completes the tranquil ambience.
Watch your step ascending the steep, narrow staircase of the building that's over a hundred years old. There are two larger rooms with numerous tables as well as two VIP rooms with their own seating area. If you're looking for a romantic spot to take a date, the balcony lit up at night is a good choice or enjoy the warmer weather in the evening lounging outside on the terrace with a warm drink. The Thai Style Milk Tea (RMB30) is a frothy, dark yellow, sugary drink that can also be drunk cold. The sweetness of the tea goes well with the various appetisers available.
The Barbeque Sliced Pork, for RMB68, is tender and the portion is large, served with a light sauce and crisp salad. All dishes are prepared by two Thai chefs who guarantee the authenticity of the food. The portions here are hefty and filling. For those who'd like to try a bit of everything, order the Mixed Plate (RMB88) - made up of two types of meat skewers: large chunks of high-quality meat, accompanied with a selection of satay, sweet and a chilli sauce, Crispy Spring Rolls and Fried Prawn Balls. For those trying to get over a cold, the Green Curry Beef (RMB88) will unblock any stuffy nose, though the beef was slightly chewy. Alternatively, the Thai Spicy and Sour Prawn Soup for RMB118 has a definite kick to it and the prawns are fresh, large and crispy.
Look out for the restaurant's new lunch and afternoon tea set menus.
The Bottom Line: A great place to lounge and enjoy authentic Thai food in the heart of Taikang Lu.
