When the sun sets over Shanghai, the real show begins. Visit the Bund, the city’s historic waterfront with early 20th-century European architecture. If you look at the Huangpu River over an area called Pudong, you will see exactly the opposite. A few decades ago there were no skyscrapers in this place. Now it has been turned into a huge futuristic metropolis. And at night it serves as a giant billboard for the city’s progress. The Oriental Pearl Tower with its balls and spikes is still a symbol of Shanghai. The bottle opener of the Shanghai World Financial Center behind it has an impressive viewing platform on the 100th floor. There are countless other glass and steel buildings between the two.
